Swedish Folk Music Treasures:
Nisse Nordström graciously consented to be the first subject of the Treasures series. Born in 1921, he is one of the most colorful characters I've ever chanced to meet. Peter Hedlund and Nisse are old buddies and I filmed two sessions with them in Nisse and Gunvor's Upplands Väsby home, first in September 2001 and later in February 2002.
Much of Nisse's tune repertoire is from the tradition of Grop Gustav and Albert Jansson who were childhood neighbors. Nisse has been a Riksspelman since 1974. In 1978 he became the first spelman (folk musician) employed in that capacity by the Swedish state. Nisse passed away April 29, 2015.

I was totally mesmerized by the sample clip of Nisse Nordström's DVD. I have never seen a nyckelharpa before but I'm sure I've heard one. The sound is fantastic! I have an old 33 1/3 LP record titled Swedish Fiddle Music from Boda Village. I love that kind of music. Well, it took me over a week to decide to purchase your DVD and I must tell you it's a great DVD. I just loved it. Thanks for your time and effort in filming and producing it. I play the accordion myself.

Filmen om Nisse är ju underbar! Sån tur att Du kommer från USA och satsar tid och pengar på den här dokumentationen. Det finns ju många många spelmän som man borde dokumentera på det här sättet. Det är ju oersättligt för kommande tider att kunna lyssna och se på hur de gamla spelade. Tänk om dina filmer kunde få en uppföljning även utanför Uppland. Vi har fått "tjuvtitta" på filmen med Nisse Nordström och Peter Puma Hedlund. Det är den första av Rita Leydons serie med DVD-filmer med (främst) nyckelharpspelmän. I pipe line ligger en film med Sture och Sonia Sahlström och en med Hasse Gille. Ibland när det kommer en ny skiva tänker man "wow," den här är epokgörande och den kommer att stå sig i långan tid. Gössa Anders, Hjort Anders, Eric Sahlström etc. Det råder i min värld ingen tvekan om att denna film hör till den kategorin. Jag kan möjligen tänka mig att den kommer att sälja bättre om fem år än nu, med tanke på DVD-formatet. Nu går jag och ser om filmen....

I have had a "sneak preview" of the film about Nisse Nordström and Peter Puma Hedlund. It is the first of Rita Leydon's series of films in dvd format with primarily nyckelharpsspelmän. In the pipeline are also films with Sture and Sonia Sahlström and one with Hasse Gille. Sometimes when a new cd comes out one thinks, wow, this is a milestone which will stand the test of time. Gössa Anders, Hjort Anders, Eric Sahlström etc. There is no doubt in my world that this film is in that category. I imagine that it will sell better in five years than now considering the dvd format. Now I'm going to go look at the film again ...

Got the dvd today in the mail—have already looked through it, it worked fine on my tv's dvd player, so i didn't need to see it on the computer. The next question is automatically When will the Sture Sahlström and Tore Lindqvist ones be done??? Thank you so very much, Rita, for documenting this unforgettable nyckelharpsspelman.
