The DVD [vol. 1] ... is brilliant, and as soon as I have worked through it I will be ordering the other two! ... It is a truly outstanding piece of work.... Following Peter's advice I played the whole thing through several times before picking up my harpa to learn to play. From the first part of the first lesson, how to hold the harpa, I realised that I was doing it wrong, and it is much more comfortable and easier to have the strap around the front of the tailpiece. This is just one example of how clear, concise and reasoned this DVD is; each step is logically thought out, clearly presented and the reasons behind the way it is done are well explained. It anticipates and corrects bad habits before they develop. The close-up shots of the left hand fingerings and position shifts are beautifully focused and show each movement clearly and precisely. Learning to play the harpa correctly on my own would have been nearly impossible without a teacher, even though I have many years experience as a fiddler. These DVDs should be required viewing for any aspiring harpa player, and I cannot wait until I am good enough to get the next one. My thanks ... for producing this excellent tutor.

With a little persuasion from Rita Leydon I got Peter Hedlund’s Nyckelharpskola on DVD. This was definitely the right thing to do—there are so many little things that just can’t be learned from a book. Rita seemed a little embarrassed at plugging it to me, but I think if anything she undersold what she and Peter achieved on this disc. It was immediately apparent to me that the DVD contained a carefully programmed course of tunes to learn, each successive one introducing a further aspect of technique in a precisely judged and logical order based on years of practical experience of both teaching and playing nyckelharpa

Nyckel Notes, Fall 2003

Volume II arrived today. ... I am impressed at how fine a musician Peter is. He teaches well and really is demanding a lot of the student/performer. As a violin player, I appreciate what he is doing and how he is going about it.

—Joseph Kostusyk, Wickliffe, Ohio

I received Volume II yesterday, and it is GREAT! Volume II is even better than Volume I in that it has so much more; and that each tune is individually accessible without having to "page" through the tunes to get to the one I want to practice. I eagerly await Volume III. Keep up the good work!!!

—Glenn Greene, Knoxville, Tennessee

Well, I got the Nyckelharpskola DVD and it is very nice. You have a good sense of design. I like how Peter's lower body disappears into the black background so that we can focus on the harpa itself. The graphics are also very nice ... oh, and of course, Peter is very good and the translator's voice is quite pleasant. Thank you for coming up with the idea. I am looking forward to the next volumes.

—Rickford Grant, Toyama, Japan

I got the DVD yesterday and I think it is WONDERFUL! I eagerly look forward to volumes II and III.

—Glenn W. Greene, Tennessee

I got a copy of your new DVD which is INCREDIBLE! What an amazing project! Nice job! What a wonderful gift to the nyckelharpa world. Especially for us dirtball Americans who rarely get to see a real player!

—Tim Newcomb, Vermont

The directions that came with the DVD were easy to understand and it worked perfectly the first time. I learned how to play harpa sitting down without the strap ... my back says thank you. I like that Peter plays each tune slowly first and that there are some easy tunes like Twinkle Little Star for us new players to practice before trying the more complicated tunes. It's easy for our oldest daughter and I to follow Peter on our big widescreen TV and practice together. I highly recommend this superior nyckelharpa training DVD.

—Tom Erickson, Florida
