Gunnar Öberg shared his first nyckelharpa project with me and has kindly permitted me to post his words and pictures on my website.The English translation is by me.
Jag är en nyligen pensionerad familjeläkare som sedan ett år har fyllt min tid med en meningsfull sysselsättning—jag har byggt en nyckelharpa efter Sören Åhkers utmärkta instruktionshäfte och med hjälp av den fina DVD:n du tagit. Det har tagit mig ett år (jag är ingen slöjdare), men med ledning av filmen och med täta telefonkontakter med Sören tycker jag det gått bra faktiskt. Jag tänkte när jag beställde virke ja en hel byggsats, från Sören att jag kanske bara gör en harpa under min livstid och därför begärde jag det absolut bästa han kunde få fram av virke och tillbehör. Jag fick verkligen en högklassig byggsats med mycket tätvuxen gran i lock och botten, verkligt fin textur på sarger osv. Bifogar litet bilder ... tyvärr ingen ljudfil men jag garanterar att klangen inte skäms för sig. Harpan sjunger—ja, oftast när jag lyckas få vacker ton—men det är SVÅRT. Jag har ju inte spelat stråkinstrument tidigare.

Vilken utmärkt idé att filma Sören ”in action” och vilken trevlig och instruktiv film! Utan den hade det verkligen varit svårt detta! Jag har sett på den flera gånger och även plöjt instruktionshäftet otaliga gånger. Det har lönat sig att tänka igenom varje moment i förväg, och det har fått ta den tid som behövts!

Jag har byggt som han visar på filmen, med 6 gr lutande sarger (ritningen som medföljer instruktionsboken är ju litet enklare utan lutningen). Har gjort en del modifieringar, t.ex. har jag inte Sörens handaskicklighet med kniven så knavrarna är filade med nålfil till rätt form

Lådan till harpan var litet knepig att bygga men det gick det också. Min dyrgrip måste ju ligga fint under transporterna. Nu någon timma träning dagligen och där har jag hjälp av Peter Puma Hedlunds fina Nyckelharpskola  del 1. Småningom ska jag väl ha 2:an (och 3:an!) också. Fördelen med Peters omsorgsfulla instruktion är ju att jag inte hamnar fel från början och tränar in krånglig fingersättning t.ex

Jag har just i dagarna skickat en beställning till Sören på en byggsats till! Som sagt – tack för hjälpen med den fina filmen

 I am a recently retired family doctor whohas put his time to good use building a nyckelharpa using Sören Åhker's book and your excellent DVD to guide me. It has taken me a year (I am not a woodworker) and with the help of your film and frequent phone calls to Sören, it's gone very well. I reasoned that I would probably only build one harpa in my lifetime, so when I ordered the building kit from Sören I requested the very best materials he could put together for me. What I received was truly the highest grade of fine grained spruce for the top and bottom, excellent textured woods for the sides etc. I include a few pictures for you. The sound is nothing to be ashamed of either, the harpa sings—mostly when I achieve beautiful tone, but this is DIFFICULT for me as I have never played a bowed instrument before

What an excellent idea to film Sören in action! And what a delightful and instructive film! Without it I would have struggled much more! I referred to the film many times during the project and the book has become quite worn. It pays to think through every task thoroughly andlet the work take its time

I have built as Sören shows in the film, with 6 degree slanted sideboards (the drawings that comes with the book is simpler, without the slant). I made a few modifications, for example, I don't have Sören's skill with the knife so my keys are filed to shape instead.

The carrying case was a little tricky to build, but I accomplished that also. My precious harpa has to be well protected during transport. I practice an hour or so most days with the help of Peter Puma Hedlund's Nyckelharpskola, part 1. Eventually I'll advance to part 2 and even part 3! The advantage of learning from Peter's careful instruction is that I am learning correctly from the start and I wont have to unlearn all sorts of bad habits later.

A couple of days ago I placed an order with Sören for another building kit! Thank you for all the help I got from the film.
